LEJOG Day 6 - Clun to Runcorn

Day 6
85 miles
5h 49 min
1020m ascent
3200 calories

Goodbye to Carlos :( and towards my homeland to see the family! Fastest but flattest day yet!

Gathered the troops at their camping bit of the hostel at 0800, obviously they weren't quite ready yet (tsk!), and heard about Carlos' "comfortable" night on the kitchen floor. Apparently a DofE teacher had gone in to borrow a pan & had had to step over him completely horrified - so Greg promptly informed him of Carlos the Great's accomplishments in a sort of 'don't you know who he is?!' way, resulting in the feeling of honour at having stepped over such a legend.

Carlos' "towel", which doubles up as a bandana apparently

We got going 0830 & said our goodbyes & nos vemos', then Greg & I hammered out 30 miles in 2 hours, along the Welsh marches (& down one stunner of a downhill) into Shrewsbury. Coffee & vegan cake anyone? :D
Firstly, however, we had to admire the river & it's resident ducks, which is when we made some new friends - a lovely elderly couple told us their story about how they went to school together, then lead separate lives for 60 years, their partners both passed away a few years between each other, & they then got back in touch through Facebook - they've now been married for a year :). The lady then handed me £10 to sponsor me for the Alzheimer's Society.

Delicious vegan cakes at O'Joy in Shrewsbury

We found a coffee shop with vegan cakes (ahh! ), 5 different types to be exact, so after what felt like 10 min of stressful deliberation I went for coconut sponge, & a raw carrot cake to takeaway, whilst greg chorus chocolate iced white sponge (total cake envy as his was so much better - but the kind guy let me have as much of his as I wanted, legend!).

We pretty much hammered the final flat 50 odd miles out, with only a short stop for some lunch snacks by a lake.

Got into Frodsham at 1530 and got Greg to his lovely campsite (Lady Heyes) 2 miles away.

Then onto Runcorn to meet my father at the Holiday Inn, and have dinner with the family since I'm so close to home tonight!

Dad will be joining from tomorrow on his motorbike! Will really only see him in the evenings & potentially lunch too, but it was to kindly be around in case anything happened to me when I was originally doing this trip solo!

Pues, buenas noches. Into Lancashire & the beautiful Forest of Bowland tomorrow.
